Dodger project - Hunter 33

posted 10-07-2008 by David Underwood

This is my Hunter 33, a 1982 model that I have owned since new. I always wanted a dodger, however, the expense was too much to purchase one, so... I made it myself. The sewing machine as well as most materials were purchased from Sailrite.com. They also supplied my instructions as well as phone support when I had questions. Great people.

This photograph shows the stainless steel 7/8 inch tubing which I purchased in 10 foot lengths from Boaters World. I built a tube bender out of plywood according to instructions found in Don Caseys book..Canvaswork and Sail Repair. This book also has instructions on building a dodger as well as many other projects.

The finished project!!! Wayne at North Sails in Buford, GA sold me stainless steel handrails that mount on each side of the dodger. These are a must! Much thanks to Wayne for all the good advice on my dodger project.

The dodger has already proven to be a really nice add-on. We have finally gotten much needed rain in the Atlanta area and the dodger allows me to keep the companionway hatch open without getting rain inside the cabin. The winters we have in the south allow us to sail all year round, the dodger will make it alot more comfortable!
