Mounting a Claw Anchor

posted 01-15-2012 by Ralph Johnstone

For years I have suffered through sleepless nights at anchor because I used a Danforth anchor. It fit nicely in the anchor roller (as shown in fig. 1) but it was just not reliable.

The anchor I wanted to use was a claw but did not fit well in the roller. It tended to wobble from side to side while under way and when deploying the anchor, had a nasty habit of wanting to take a bite out of the hull as you lifted up on the chain to start it sliding over the roller as shown in fig. 2.

The solution to the wobbling was to install a small stop on each. In this case I used 1 dia. UHMW - PE dowel and threaded bolts into a small pilot hole in the dowel to mount them as shown in fig. 3.

The problem of the anchor wanting to curve under and ding the bow each time it was deployed was solved by installing a piece of 2-1/2 wide X 1/8 thick 316 SS plate bent into shape and mounted (using machine screws)under the existing anchor holder. This is shown in fig. 4. The plate was hot worked into shape and then progressively sanded down with emery to a #1500 grit and then polished with cut polish. Im still waiting for the first sign of corrosion (didnt passivate) but after three years, it still has a mirror polish.
