Companionway doors

posted 02-11-2009 by Steve Cook

Here are a few photos of the companionway doors that I made for my 99 H310.

The doors are made from 4/4 teak and the lexan glass planels slide out from the top of the doors. The door have snap off hinges for easy removal.

These doors are designed much like the doors offered here on HOW except for the removable glass panels.

Pre-install

Heres a shot of the doors after the final install. The first fitting of the doors took about 4 hours. The doors were then taken back to my shop for a little cut here and a little sanding their, then 5 coats of Cetol.

Installed on the boat

As I said, the doors just pop on and off in less than 3 seconds. The final thing left for me to do yet, is to attach the screen on the inside of the doors (velcro)and fit the header sil on the sliding hatch. This will help seal the top of the doors from rain.

I am a custom commercial wood worker by profession (over 25 years), and I would say that I have about 60 hrs. in these doors right now and Have about 10 hrs. to go. These doors are the 4th. set I have made and each time they get better.

They where not cheap or easy to make and one could get a set from HOW for much less than I could make them.

The big benefit from these doors is the very quick access in and out of the boat and ventilation with the screens.

If you do decide on a set of doors for your boat, save yourself a big head ache and hire a very good trim carpenter or cabinet maker to install them. You only get one chance at fitting them and it would be very easy to wreck your doors!!!
