Addiing GPS to flat screen in salon

posted 06-20-2011 by Chuck Creel

After installing a back-up VHF which had AIS reciver, I wanted to add it to the LCD TV in salon.

Behing the AC panel is a wire raceway that goes to the builge. Pulled a CAT 5 cable through to builge with 5 pair of wires which gives you 3 pairs for spare or future use.

In the builge, there is another raceway that goes forward to in front of head.

In that void there is a route to get under the settee by forward bulkhead underneath.
That is where i put the computer and electrical connections.

You will 2 each serial to parralel adapters that convert USB to DB-9 connector.

Also the female DB-9 plug and sheild to make the connection to the adapter. All these items are readily available at Radio Shack and you can do it all yourself.

They should wire up as follows.

pin 2 - NEMA +
pin 5 NEMA - or ground.

Set the baud rate to 4800 and set software up to use the com port of the USB adapters.

then simply turn on computer , load chart software and search for GPS .

Then you have a 23 inch chart plotter display in salon for passengers/crew that are always asking where we are. lol
