Topping Lift and Reefing Lines

posted 10-07-2008 by Steve Dion

This is the forward end of the boom. There are 3 jam cleats just aft of where the lines exit the boom. The first line on the startboard side is the first reef. The middle line is for the mainsail outhaul. The third line port side is the deep reef.

In this photo you can see the topping lift cleat.

Topping lift cleat

In this photo you can see the topping lift attachment. This boat has a Dutchman model C. The jam cleat allows us to lower the Dutchman with a continous loop that is attached to the topping lift pulley.

You can also see the lines exiting the aft end of the boom. The line exits the boom, goes up to the reef point and then back down to the movable pad eye in the bottom of the Isomat boom.

When reefing we loosen the main Halyard, attach the reef cringle to the rams horn. Then will pull in the appropriate reef line and jam the line and raise the main halyard again. The we tie off the reef point to the boom to tidy up things. If you own a Hunter you need to get proficent at this task.
