Hard top Hunter 45cc, solar panel installation

posted 06-14-2015 by Stephen Ribakoff

After having gotten quotes to replace the sunbrella bimini on my 45cc I decided to investigate replacing it with a hollow core fiberglass hard top. My boat is located in Panama and I talked to several people who recommended a local craftsman whose work I had seen on other boats. His price was less then replacing the sunbrella. I wanted the top to utilize the existing frame for the sunbrella and connect to the fixed arch for support. I contracted with a welder to put 4- 3”x4” ss tabs on the arch forward and 3-tabs aft side of the arch to act as an attachment point for 2-250watt solar panels I wanted to install. The hard top construction included cutouts on the aft side trim to slide into the arch tabs, as well as 1” lip above the surface to act as a rain catcher and a 2” lip below to attach side curtains and dodger. The top was pigmented light blue on the bottom and white on the top. Two thru hull fittings were located in the front to act as drains for the water catcher. The total size of the hard top was about 7x14 ft and weighed about 125 pounds. I fastened it to the existing bimini frame using ss u-bolts. We are long term cruisers so I do not care about the extra windage, but love the rain catching ability. In addition to the 2-250 watt solar panels I also installed 2-140 watt panels on the hard top area, with more room if needed for additional panels. I am sorry if the pictures do not show a lot of detail.
