Assymetric Tack Nub

posted 11-18-2009 by Grizz

Jibing an A-kite tacked to the port (or starboard) toe-rail becomes a nightmare upon completion of the tack, especially if you have a roller furler. The tack will chafe as it rubs against the drum of the roller furler.

So, after a ton of sketches, measurements, mock-ups and semi-successful attempts, the picture shows the final product installed. Fabricated w/ 1/4 aluminum and welded to combine the 3 individual parts into one unit (nub, port and starboard legs), it only took a few minutes to wire brush the fitting to achieve this appearance. Mounted to the toe-rail w/ 2-pair of 3/16 ss screws and nylon keeper nuts, it almost looks OEM (but Im biased).

Now, jibes are accomplished with the tack forward of the furler drum, providing approximately 4-6 of clearance. This addition is also PHRF legal, as they permit up to 12 of forward extension for an A-kite tack.

Total cost? @ $20 bucks, most for the welding and waaaaay too much time.
