Stuffing box issues

posted 09-12-2008 by Warren Milberg

You may have the OEM Hunter white nylon stuffing box which has some complicated innards that make it difficult to service. If your box looks like the pic I posted below, it will have two rings of packing separated by 3 compression washers. When I had this stuffing box in the pic on my H28.5, I could find no way to remove and replace the packing with the gland in place as I could not remove the forward (or any) of the washers.

Some owners have had luck in trying to pick out the washer(s) and then get to the old packing material behind it/them, but I could not as there just wasnt room between the forward end of the gland and the aft end of the coupling.

I was going to replace my cutlass bearing anyway and so when I pulled the shaft I also just replaced the OEM white gland with a stronger and more easily serviced conventional bronze gland. You may want to consider this, too.
