Changing cable to outboard

posted 10-07-2008 by Jim Seamans

See Top of pedestal removed

Ive remove the top of the pedestal and looking down into the confusion. Ive already removed the connections to the levers. The port side to the gears was broken just below the brass connector.

See Cable holder

Until I talked to Dave I hadnt know what this nut was for, now I do. It holds the cables in place on the inside of the pedestal. There is a later photo of it.

See Take it apart

Yow! You just about have to remove the pedestal to get sufficient room to get at everything.

See Needed to take off the chain

With the chain in place there is not enough room to pull the cables up pass the steering. Was this ever fun.

See Cable holder up and out

This is the piece that holds the cables on the inside of the pedestal. There is a long cotter pin that holds them into that plastic piece.

See Released the steering cable

To get enough slack in the chain, I had to take one of the pulleys off. With that I was able to lift the chain off of the sprocket. You can see the damaged cable in the foreground where the break occurred. I think this happen from me tilting the engine and banging the cable.

See Yeah! Cables installed!

Now all I have to do is put everything back. Now where did I put those screws..... Probably would have been a little easier if I had remove the wheel. Ahh 20/20 hind sight.

See Fun part !

Running the new cable with the old is a two person job. You can see the cables exiting the pedestal to the top of the picture. For those of you wondering how I got this photo, last year I installed a inspection port up through the berth area. This was a lucky install, routing these cables was not easy.
