H260 engine controls and instruments

posted 10-07-2008 by Joe C.

Here is a view of the following equipment added top to bottom: Raynav ST-40 Bi-data (Speed, Depth and water temp), Raynav-300 GPS-Plotter, Plastimo 5 Olympic 135 Compass, Edson Mod. 870ST engine controls, 54 straight guard with cup holders, wheel brake (not visible in this photo) and I custom made the instrument pod from teak and 1/4 UV resistant UHMW plastic. The wiring runs down through both tubes and to the access area overhead in the aft berth via 3/4 conduit cupplings which will thread directly on the threads at the bottom of the pedestal guard. The helm section had to be removed to do this.

I grouped all the gauges to make a panel appearance. They include: ignition switch, radio/CD remote (a must!), fuel gauge, tach, low oil press light, hour meter, and battery switch.

I wanted directional thrust steering (for docking etc.) as well as steerage in water shallower than the rudders draft. I used all stainless components which were 1/2 tie rod ends, 1/2 fine thread rod, and 1/2 cotterless clevis pins (ball detent). The fixed pin above allows me to detach the outboard from the steering before raising it for sailing. It stays fixed on straight ahead. In this position you can also steer with the rudder while motoring.
