Caulking the companionway

See Just Hanging in there

As I checked the existing caulk, I found that it was barely hanging on.

See Amazing how solid it looked

It appears that the previous owner tried to stop the leak by using a standard bathtub caulking. It filled a gap, but let plenty of water in.

See Plenty of room for bedding material

The extrusion has a nice large area that needs to be filled with bedding material, when I was probing with my knife, it was able to slide right in. What that tells me is that this void was not full of bedding material, so as you will see in the following pictures, that wont be a problems.

See Clean, not so clean

The existing bedding material had to be cut out with a razor blade, if you go to do this get plenty of blades as you will have to change them pretty often. The bedding could not be scraped out, so once I cut the majority of it out, I went over it with a Dremel mototool (verrrrrrrry carefully). This sped it up, but to be safe, I re-epoxied over the entire frame.

See Wow, Fiberglass and gelcoat

More cleaning, no epoxy

See Nice clean boat

After digging out all of the bathtub caulking, removing the screws that held the extrusion in place, a little judicious force popped the extrusion loose. (actually, I braced myself against the pedestal guard and pushed with my feet) This is actually two photos, the top one shows the dirt that was able to migrate past the seal (i.e. the black stuff) and the second shows the water stains on the inside of the boat.

See Now how do I get this back in the tube?

Once you mate the two surfaces together, you may get a little bedding material squished out of the space.

See I think that I can get a little more in here

As you can see, plenty of Bedding material.

See If water gets through all this...

Make sure that the surface that the extrusion is going to be placed on has some bedding material as well.

See Look, a disappearing knife

By probing with my knife, I found that I was going to have to rebed the entire aluminum extrusion.

See Not too bad

When I bought my boat (1991 H28), the engine hatch cover (the first step into the boat from the companionway) was partially rotted, so I ordered a new hatch cover from Hunter. Once the weather turned nice, it was time to tackle the actual leak. At first things looked pretty good, thought that I might get by just by re-caulking the outer edge.
