Trapezoidal Forward Hatch Replacement

posted 10-07-2008 by Chuck Fort

here is the new hatch being dry fit in the enlarged hole.

The new hatch

The part number on the hatch is Bomar 2092. It comes in clear and smoke.

The part number of the hatch.

To make the new hatch fit, I had to widen the opening about 1/8 on each side of the front, about 1/4 on each side in the back and taper between the front and the back. I was able to do this with a course drum sander on a cordless drill. The hatch drops into the opening about 1, so I only had to widen the open 1 deep.

Starboard side grinding

I had to do a little extra grinding in the corner. The front to aft dimension only had to be enlarged about an 1/8 total.

The whole hole, ready for the hatch!

This is a shot from underneath looking aft toward the hatch, with a reflection of the bow.

Underside View

I used 3M 101 to seal the hatch. It is sealed, but not screwed in place yet.

The hatch in place

With as much trouble as it has been finding a new hatch, I did not want it to leak. I used a little too much sealant. I trimmed the extra sealant as it hardened.

A little too much goop

I plan to caulk around the inside with white caulk to improve the appearance.
