Kick-up rudders should do just that - kick up when grounded. One way is to use a shear pin, but many small boats use the CL 257 Camcleat as the release mechanism. A number of H260 owners use this device which is easy to install, but the H26 rudder requires a different installation. I installed the Cam Cleat on my 1998 H26 a few years ago and it works great. To explain the picture - I used a very low stretch synthetic strong line and drilled a new hole for it in the rudder a few inches above the existing large diameter line used to raise and lower the rudder. I left the old line in place and still use it to raise and lower the rudder but not to tie it down - the cam cleat does this. I used two pieces of aluminum L shaped stock(you can purchase at any hardware store) and through bolted them to the cam cleat and also bolted them across the two aluminum rudder plates to attach the Cam Cleat to the plates. The Cam Cleat is at an angle to allow it to function efficiently when tight - the line is a straight line when exiting. There is a piece of PVC pipe on the rear rudder cross bolt where the line turns from the cam cleat toward the rudder which prevents the line chafing. I still use the wing nut to assist but the rudder does not creep up under way as it used to with the wing nut alone.
