Dissassembled Rudder 1982 H19

posted 10-07-2008 by Nick Ellis

Rudder locked in the up position.

Rudder up

Left the tiller and the rudder lowers. This is controled by a line (in a cleat) attached to the tiller down to the lowering mechanism in the black aluminum housing

Spring runs from the rudder pivot bolt and up to bolt that hold the two plastic wheels (that makes up the lowering mechanism) that ride in the valleys in the top of the rudder. See the next couple of photos

Spring would be on the out side of the housing. Two plastic wheels ride on a bolt and are seperated by a metal plate. The bolt goes through a holein the bottom of the plate. In a second hole in the plate the line to the jam cleat is attached. The springs hold wheels on to the top of the rudder as they ride the valleys on the top of the rudder as it is raised and lowered.

The three mounting holes in the black house are hard to see in this photo. Look at the other photos to see where the bolts go through. Note two wheels, metal plate with line tied on, spring going from wheel bolt down to pivot bolt.
