Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Chris Manolis

Year built 1994
Location of boat Brookville, Indiana
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I am not sure...the tenderness of the boat has prevented my wife from being comfortable on it inheavy winds. I do believe that the 23.5 is anexcellent value for the money.
Gear that's been added Sail cover, jib bag, cam cleats, VHF radio, mastmount antenna, wisker pole, and opening port...so far.
Structural or complex improvements Added an opening port from the aft berth to thecockpit.
The boat's best features The size of the cockpit, the cabin layout considering the size of the boat and, the walk through transom.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The jib gets hung up very easily on the forward cleat and the stanchions.
Sailing characterisitcs As I mention (as well as others) the boat is tender. It does very well in around 10 knots of wind. I have found that reefing early helps. In stronger winds20 knots plus the boat will heel to just under 35degrees before rounding up. Once I hit 35 degrees, paddling the rudder helps to keep the boat fromrounding up. I have yet to get to 40 degrees ofheel and stay there with out have to ease the main or I do end up, rounding up.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat motors well, and the position of the out-board mount makes motoring very easy.
Liveability Very comfortable for two on weekend, four people isworkable but tight.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) O.K., on a scale from 1 to 10 I would rate it as a 6.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealer "Strickly Sail" has been very helpful, much more that Hunter.
