Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Beau Lawrence

Year built 1995
Location of boat Kemah TX, Watergate Yacht Center
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 97
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes, its been a good learner boat.
Gear that's been added GPS with Chart, Depth Sounder, Compass
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features water ballast served good purpose before I join yacht club. I got tired of stepping the mast.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Rudder lifting rope wears out. Jam cleats have always been a problem.(won't hold a good as I would like)
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is a little tipsy. I guess it comes from having the ballast so close to the water line. Swept spreaders have to be watched in down wind sails.
Motoring characterisitcs Boarding ladder will not stop rattling when using the outboard. I think Im going to remove the swing latch and replace with a velco strap of some sort.
Liveability none. only a weekender with good friends. a little tight but good for a small boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I bought used. Although every time a go to Lynn's Sailboats to inquire about parts or new options they act like I putting them out. Have better luck going to riggers and shops (ie west Marine or Blue water ships store in KemaH)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from a Broker who is now out of business
