Year built 1998
Location of boat channel islands, ca
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added GPS, Windspeed, dodger, power windlass and winch.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features all around value, good balance between sailing speed, easy of handling, cruising comfort, economy and value.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. anchor cannot be raised with electric windlass into anchor sleeve. That is, windlass will raise rode and chain up to anchor, but then, at the highest point, the anchor hangs vertical over the bow and will not traverse the 90 degree angle over the roller... Definitely a design flaw. Small perhaps, but a very big nuisance.
Sailing characterisitcs strong, easy to handle, fast, stiff enough, vast improvement over my Morgan 41 sloop. When I bought my Morgan, years ago, the advertising catch phrase was 'sea kindly.' I think the term was ahead of its time. This boat, the Hunter 410 is what I would call sea kindly. It rides well in all conditions - astonishingly well.
Motoring characterisitcs Not terrific. I'm uncertain if this is a design flaw or if there's a problem with my boat. The boat under full power wants to turn hard in either direction. The wheel has to be held and held firmly. Otherwise, the wheel will spin hard to the right or left. Very annoying. The dealer's response - why not buy AutoHelm...? Fatuous.
Liveability I lived aboard my Morgan for a year - it was like camping. I'm not going to liveaboard the Hunter but it would be an improvement. Shortcomings: not enough cabinet space in and around galley, space behind settees is not utilized - I think it's set aside for air conditioning (not useful or necessary in So. Calif. waters).
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Voyager Marine in Oxnard, CA has been great. Particularly their shipwright Dave Swanson. Marty and Rick are great, too. I'd recommend this trio to anyone.
