The boat's best features Extremely comfortable and spacious below deck and an extremely spacious cockpit. The storage is great, the boat has precise handling and is very fast. A friend has a 376 that he races actively and usually wins his class. He has replaced the main with an even larger racing main.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Adjusting to the full roach large main was an experience. Our previous boat for 6 years was a Newport 30. It had a relatively small main with a 150 genoa. I have learned to reef quickly to reduce heel and gain speed.
Sailing characterisitcs Our experience with the Hunter has been limited to day cruises and weekends anchored at Santa Cruz Island. We had weeklong trips in the Newport with stops at Catalina, Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel Island. I guess I missed the characteristics question, again the boat is responsive, fast and comfortable once you come to terms with the power in the main. We returned from a Santa Cruz anchorage 24.6 nm from our breakwater in less than 4 hours reefed in 6 ft seas with a small craft advisory. The 4 hours included one very big tack and circling outside the harbor entrance to lower sails and get clearance to enter because the entrance was blocked by a dredge. We were comfortable the entire trip..
Motoring characterisitcs Adequate speed and good control Backing
Liveability Great
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Called once for help solving an anchor stowage problem. I did not get much help but after opening the panels I understand that a fix is not easy. The windlass is too far forward in the V and I cannot see a way to fix it. Hunter recognized the problem and did a total redesign on the 380. For what it is worth I do not like the 380 fix because the anchor locker will collect too much water.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Friendly, easy to get along with but lacking in follow-up and attention to detail.
