Review of the Hunter 34 by greg green

Year built 1984
Location of boat Houston, Tx
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1991
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I'm very happy with this boat. For the most part it sails better, faster, and with less breakdowns than several other boats in the area. Not to say that it's perfect, but then what boat is?
Gear that's been added a/c, refrigeration, radar, cockpit vhf, bi-radial sail, harken roller furling, autohelm 6000, and bimini.
Structural or complex improvements Had a problem with a leaky bildge pump which resulted in cabin floorboards rotting underneath. It is now repaired and stronger than before.
The boat's best features Very easy to sail. Relatively quick and very roomy for its size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No manual bildge pump bothers me. Concerned with stories of bad compression posts(although no sign of this problem as yet). Gelcoat is chaulky unless waxed at least twice a year. Iron keel has minor rusting.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat is superb in winds from 8-12 knots. Boat sails well in winds over 12 knots but B
Motoring characterisitcs I have a standard fixed two bladed prop which pushes the boat along at between 6.5 and 7 knots at about 3000- 3200 rpms. The boat doesn't seem to stop as readily when put in reverse as other boats I've driven. Excessive vibration at times when first reving up.
Liveability Very livable, especially for a boat that was designed in the early to mid 80's.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't had a lot of dealings with Hunter but when I have they have been very responsive and helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a broker and the deal went smoothly.
