Review of the Hunter 34 by Leon Earl

Year built 1983
Location of boat Vermilion Bay Louisiana
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, The Hunter 34 is a very good vessel at the price. It provides generous accomodations for a weekend or extended cruise for 2 to 4 people and yet is still competitive in club races.
Gear that's been added The boat was loaded upon purchase with heatpump air control, auto pilot, wind bimini, dodger, etc. I have only added a garmin GPS 130 and a Jensen CD stereo and speakers.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Generous below accomodations, sleek style and its general utility.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Some of the teak accents below are suffering from aging and there are some gel coat stress cracking on the upper deck. The teak and holly sole is suffering from some weak spots as a result of water not draining properly through all bile weep holes.
Sailing characterisitcs Mostly moderate winds on Vermilion bay but an occasional blow in thunder storms.
Motoring characterisitcs Have taken a couple of cruises down the ICW between Vermilion Bay and Daupin Island with some extended motoring. Had an occasional over heating problem during 100 deg. August cruise down ICW where is was necessary to open engine compartment to allow engine to cool while under motor way. May be heat exchanger is not 100 Percent efficient. Have not trouble shot yet.
Liveability Weekend and short cruises for 2 to 4. A close couple could live aboard.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Over the years Hunter personnel have been very friendly and helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased through Murray Yacht Sales of New Orleans. Slight misunderstanding when after purchase I found out the mast had been reduced from factory height to 50' to accomodate NW Florida coast fixed bridges, otherwise a very positive and helpful group.
