The boat's best features Roomy cockpit, after cabin is very accommodating. The galley is very workable and has plenty of storage. The swim platform makes it convenient to get on and off the boat provided you can back in. The bow thruster makes this a lot easier.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The shore power hatch on the transom doesnt stay latched and the fixed shore power cables are difficult to stow. The fuel fill is located here as well, which means you have to drop the swim platform to fuel up. I see this being difficult on a long passage if you were trying to transfer fuel from jerry jugs on deck. (Think ICW ) The black window sealant has given us some on and off issues that have been tricky to isolate. We havent seen any new leaks since the dealer replaced the caulking.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails like a witch. Very quick on all points of sail with the exception of a run. Saw 8.1 knots on Sea trials, with the boat on a beam reach in 17 knots and full sails. Boat was probably over canvassed but never felt like it would round up or be out of control. Overall very stiff. The chine digs in and she tracks straight and true. Also sails well in light winds where weve seen boat speeds of 4 knots in 7 knot winds on a beam reach. With the chute up she sails very efficiently.
Motoring characterisitcs Our delivery from Racine to Manitowoc was in fog and still wind conditions, so we had two days of motoring to evaluate this. Boat will do 8 kts. at 2800 RPM and 7.2 at 2400 RPM. Fuel consumption for the whole summer season was 13 gallons, including the delivery trip. Very maneuverable with almost no prop walk.
Liveability Very comfortable. We have AC and heat, which makes it comfortable regardless of the weather. The cabin has plenty of headroom. The separate freezer and fridge provide plenty of room for groceries. The galley has plenty of counter space to prepare meals. One complaint is the height of the dinette table. It is too low so that its hard to slide in and out without banging your knees. I would like to see the table raised a couple inches. My wife misses the wedge shaped corner cushions we had in our 33 for lounging. The drop down cockpit table is an improvement over the table arrangement of the 33. Its much easier to move around although there is nothing to brace yourself on when healed. A wedge on the cockpit sole like we had on our 23.5 or 26 would be perfect. Weve had my son and his family aboard for an afternoon sail and swim. Swim platform works great and there was still room to cook up burgers and serve lunch. We sleep in the aft cabin. We found the cushions to be thick enough to not require an additional mattress pad, but a set of FROLI Springs are on my wish list. Plenty of room when sleeping and plenty of storage. The v-berth also seems quite roomy although we have not used it for sleeping. Storage is pretty good, but I want to add some book shelves and wine/spirit storage in the main cabin. We miss this feature from our 33.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No direct dealing with the factory. Biggest issue was setting up warranty for factory installed electronics. The boat came with an Kindle and flash drive for the owners manuals. I would have preferred the leather bound manual similar to the one provided with my 33.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Racine Riverside Marine was our dealer. This was the second boat purchased from them. They gave us a good trade on our 33 and the boat was well prepared. We had a two week shakedown period at their marina to test sail the boat and work out any bugs. We had an issue with the shower sump pump which was addressed promptly. We added some equipment, most notably the AIS and inverter and the installations have been working great.
Other comments We love this boat. When compared to similar boats from other builders, you are getting a lot more for the same or less money. Although advertised as a 37 footer, the reality is the boat specs out like a 40 footer and in some cases is actually larger then some advertised 40 footers. Because of this value, we were able to afford to add a lot of equipment and make this boat perfect for us.
