Review of the Hunter 34 by Doug Burton

Year built 1986
Location of boat Vancouver, BC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2013
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? So far, yes. I was having trouble finding a boat in the price range I wanted to pay that had all of them amenities I was looking for. It's a lot of boat for the money
Gear that's been added No but previous owner added refrigeration, Webasto heater and self tailing winches
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Size for the money, more structurally sound/seaworthy than many newer Hunters, fast in light air
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Split head is nice for people using the vanity but tiny for using the head. Hatches are bad for catching the jib sheets but lots of ways to mitigate that problem. Heater is noisy - unusable overnight if someone is sleeping in the aft cabin. (Might just be ours) Heard a lot about compression post issues but so far no problems on my boat.
Sailing characterisitcs Easily overpowered but good in light air. For windy environments suggest a jib rather than the 135 genoa we're using. Need to reef early. It's a bit of a challenge in areas where wind is quite variable.
Motoring characterisitcs A bit slow with our current 2-blade prop. Unsure of how much improvement a 3-blade would make.
Liveability Pretty good for the price but brand new 33's put it to shame in the comfort dept. Problem is the new Hunters aren't as seaworthy IMHO. Aft birth is roomy once you're in but tough to get in and out. Both cabins have doors but neither have enough room for someone to change with the door closed unless laying down. It's all about trade-offs. We paid less than $40K for our boat so we feel like we got good value.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Westerly Yacht Sales in BC - Excellent.
