Review of the Hunter 29.5 by BobB

Year built 1996
Location of boat Toms River, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2010
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this has been a great upgrade for my wife and I. The boat has been a dream to sail. We anchor out every weekend. I don't see us going bigger at this point. Maintenance is low and I can solo sail it, when my wife has other things to do. Good for coastal cruising, came with a/c heat, large ice box that can take 100 lbs of ice. Room for beer/wine food, alcohol stove, barbecue grill, what more do you need.
Gear that's been added Boat came with an autopilot that was never installed, so I installed it. Added a Chartplotter gps off my last boat. Added a depth finder/fishfinder, due to the fact the existing depth finder orginal equipment gave unreliable readings. Installed new vhf, to replace orginal still working, but tossed it for new. Added ships clock temp, barometer.
Structural or complex improvements No complex improvements. Added extra chain to anchor.
The boat's best features Built like a tank. It was a bitch to drill holes to install gps, depth finder, chart plotter etc. This is one solid boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Window screens don't seem to fit right. I do get a little rain water in at the hatch.
Sailing characterisitcs Had the boat out on Lond Island Sound in 4-6ft seas on autopilot motoring into headwind. Loved ever second of it. Rockin and rolling. Gps took us right across sound to next club meeting point. The boat will do 6 to 7 knots with mainsail up all the way. Tight! When sailing it moves well and has an easy roll to it. Turns on dime.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors great, plenty of power out of 2gm 18 horse diesel. Mileage may vary. But it can give you half a gallon an hour at 5 knots or better.
Liveability For two adults its fine. More people and the living conditions down below begin to get tight. +2 Kids would be fine. Cockpit seats 8 people easy. Open back swim platform is best feature.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No problems from dealer.
Other comments They make some pretty fantastic boats.
