Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Rob

Year built 1978
Location of boat Port Townsend, WA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2011
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes - she is very roomy and comfortable to sail.
Gear that's been added She came loaded - I changed out the portable butane stove for an Origo passive alcohol stove.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet
The boat's best features The room down below and sailing personality.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Not happy with shower and icebox draining into bilge. I am also concerned about the future of the I-beam under the mast compression post. The privies owner fixed the rotting mast step.
Sailing characterisitcs Mostly easy sail in the area around home. Max wind to date was 20kts and she handled that with ease. Doesn't point as high as I would like but maybe we need to do some tuning. Have not done any downwind to date.
Motoring characterisitcs The YSB12 is a little under powered. We have the 3 blade prop which pushes us along at 4.5 kts. Have fought currents and wished for more power. On vacation we had no wind for 2 weeks and logged close to 200 miles without a hitch and used about 10 gals of fuel.
Liveability She would be a great live aboard for 2 for a short time - a year or so for 1 or 2. The biggest issue is quality storage. We had a 26 ft before and when we clean that boat up and moved onto the H30 we had a problem storing all our gear - we will work out. There is unused space under the V-berth.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No experience yet.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private seller
Other comments I really like the H30 and want to use her a bit longer before I add comments. One item I would like is an open(ing) transom, but that will be on the list for our next boat. Hunter makes a great product and we will look at this mfg in the future.
