Review of the Hunter 25 by KennyHoutz

Year built 1981
Location of boat Elizabeth City NC
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Great boat for the money. This is my second review but wanted to let people know you can liveaboard this boat.
Gear that's been added 20lb CQR anchor, New Hatch boards, Golf cart batterys. Solar panel, New water tank,GPS
Structural or complex improvements The anchor locker is open to the inside of the boat. When you washdown the anchor you tend to fill the bilge. I used mighty putty to block off access to the inside of the boat. Now dry bilge. Moved the water fill from inside the starboard locker to the floor of the cockpit. Just too hard to fill without getting water everywhere. Great inprovement and nice dry bilge again. Cockpit floor was 1 1/2 inch thick.
The boat's best features I have the shallow draft 2 ft 11 inches. Great for this part of North Carolina with lots of shallows. Boat perform well in most all winds. Love my Bimini and cockpit layout. Boat is ultlimate in simple design. Easy to maintain. Only two seacocks. Pressure water system. Anchor locker is ideal.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. See structural inprovement area. I plan to add a second reef point and heavy weather jib. Main hatch does not seal as well as I would like. Ice box seems useless. I have replaced it with Coleman Marine Cooler that fits under the table in main cabin
Sailing characterisitcs Boat needs some head sail to perform in all conditions. Balances well with proper sails.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors easily. Needs long shaft outboard 25 inch model.
Liveability Wife and Daughter and myself have lived aboard at the marina for 6 months now. V bearth is very comfortable for wife and myself with heads to stern. Main cabin bearths are not quite wide enough to be comfortable long term. Space is somewhat limited but we have adjusted just fine including a small dog. Head area is nice for changing clothes. Galley is too small so we eat out except for breakfast. Easy to heat with two small electric heaters. I think it would be hard to find a 25 foot boat more comfortable to live on.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never needed to contact hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Private owner purchase
Other comments Except for offshore work this is the ideal boat for my area. Plan larger boat at retirement but perfect boat while you are still working and just do weekends and vacation aboard. 2 weeks last summer was great and sailed all over eastern north carolina. Still a few rivers I have not sailed in North Carolina but plan to do them this summer.
