Review of the Hunter 35.5 by Michel Bouffard

Year built 1994
Location of boat Sept-Iles, QC, Canada
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 23-30 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, solid and fast sailboat. Solo handling is easy. Interior is well finished.
Gear that's been added Strong Track from Tides Marine is making the main sail handling a breeze. Reefing is a lot easier while staying on course. Droping the main requires sail gloves, it is quickly down. The Wichard Jibeasy boom brake is a charm when winds goes over the 20. Maxprop makes the boat backing up as easy as a car and add a knot + in forward speed. Stuffing box was replaced by a strong seal for a dry bildge. Webasto heating system provides warm and confortable overnight around an island while listening videos on the flat screen after diner. Full enclosed cockpit was installed by previous owner. Brand new Raymarine electronics installed: C80 multifunction display, instruments pod, radar, speed, depth, wind and wheel pilot. Davit, solar panel and wind generator are under installation.
Structural or complex improvements The famous aluminun holding tank was replaced. I did it before leaks starts. The rear bulkhead was cutted in the middle full lenght and replaced with teak panels including access door to the battery charger. 24 gallons tank installed along with Jabsco Y valve for direct discharge and a new macerator pump was also installed using first quality sewage hose. A second 1" vent was also installed on the tank.
The boat's best features Boat speed, sailing and motoring. Sail handling is easy. I solo a lot. The interior is roomy. My wife loves the galley and the head. Now, we can not live without a shower in a boat. Winds in our sailing area are often in 25 Knots range and the 35.5 is OK with 110% genoa.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing in the last 2 years
