Review of the Hunter 28.5 by J Grizzell

Year built 1986
Location of boat Chicago, IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yup.
Gear that's been added Harken windward sheeting car, Harken 3:1/6:1 gross/fine trim mainsheet, asymmetric spin, Lewmar cabin top hatch, new Grey portlights, head, hull liner, 32" dia. wheel, cam cleat for down haul and new halyards.
Structural or complex improvements traveler installation was a B**^$@ to install, 'cause the cavity behind the head obscured the last two mounting bolts. The repair/rebuild of the de-laminated rudder was time consuming but not difficult (dropping it was interesting).
The boat's best features Properly canvassed, she'll handle big wind (+30 kn.) w/o being tender or w/ excessive weather helm. Sturdy through large waves
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Location of depth sounder/knot meter requires contortionist to service. Wish the keel was lead so the 'Hunter Smile' didn't require maintenance every spring.
Sailing characterisitcs
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability If you consider time on the water as 'camping', you may get 4+ adults to accept the conditions. Pulling the wheel in harbor opens up the cockpit, just don't lose the key-way.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Larson Marine in Waukegan, IL was fantastic, helpful and worthy of recommendation.
