Review of the Hunter 33 by Joseph Baker

Year built 1980
Location of boat Florida east coast
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Wine Celler has been a wonderful boat. We have lived on her for the last year and cruised the Gulf. There are a few things I would look for if we were to buy another boat.
Gear that's been added Dodger, bimini, GPS/Chartplotter, radar, SSB, new sails, dinghy davits, wind generator, two solar panels, inverter.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Wine Celler is a fast boat. We usually cruise at about 6 kts. She is easy to single handle. We plan on taking her to South & Central America this fall.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. WINDLASS!!! There was no way to put a windlass on our boat. I had two engineers look at her, but there is not enough drop to keep the chain from piling up in the small anchor locker.
Sailing characterisitcs Wine Celler likes a blow. Anything above 15 kts. and she settles in to a wonderful sail.
Motoring characterisitcs A three blade prop would be better, but for a 33' coastal cruiser she does alright. We normally motor at about 5 kts.
Liveability Not bad. We have plenty of room. I would really like to have more storge room, but it IS a coastal cruiser.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought her from a broker. Smooth as silk.
