If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. I was really nervous about buying it because of all the things that had to be done, but after I did the necessary repairs we ended up sailing almost every weekend last summer. I believe that boat was made very well and as long as it is taken care of it will last for many years to come.
Gear that's been added This boat came with everything you could ever imagine. It had a good deep cycle battery, depth finder, wind speed and direction indicator, knotmeter, stereo (I replaced this with a nice Sony), VHF radio, anchor and rode, life jackets with storage case, boat hook and all of the cleaning supplies needed including wax. I made a really nice whisker pole and I am working on adding a dinner table inside. The original one is gone.
Structural or complex improvements The back of the boat was weak because it was never designed to have a motor so I had it reinforced with 4 layers of glass mat and 2 layers of roving. The previous owner reinforced the hull where the keel bolts up and repaired some spots where the rudder bumped the hull. I will probably end up having a bottom job done on it this fall.
The boat's best features The way it sails. A previous owner installed stainless countertops but did not finish the job. After I am done finishing the work and add a pressurized water system that will probably be at the top of my list as well.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only problems that I am facing are with neglect and bad workmanship from a previous owner.
Sailing characterisitcs That boat is very easy to sail and is very stable. I can sail in just about any wind and have done so last summer. It has good speed and is is very responsive.
Motoring characterisitcs My boat was never designed to have a motor so I had to reinforce the back so it wouldn't damage the fiberglass. That was done this past weekend, so I have not been able to use the motor above idle yet.
Liveability At this point I don't believe anyone could live aboard this boat. Being 6 foot 3 it would be a painful experience for me.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter does not have any information about my boat. I am a little dissapointed with that, but I understand due to the age of the boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments When we went out to the boat to see it for the first time the owner told us to bring wasp and hornet spray. He said that the owners in the club had trouble around this boat because of the wasp and bee infestation. He also told us that this boat basically sat out on the bouy for 2 years and was never even opened except to drain out the rainwater after storms. He didn't have any interest in sailing it and was looking to sell this boat to someone who would fix it up and use it. When we took the canoe out to the boat it took us 45 minutes to battle the wasps before we could even get on the boat. The outside looked really bad because it had not been cleaned in a couple years and the cabin was full of junk. I was not interested in the boat, but my wife thought it would be a good fixer upper and the price was right. We only paid a thousand dollars for it and that included the motor. It ended up being loaded with everything we ever needed and after working on it we couldn't be happier with it.
