Review of the Hunter 28.5 by Adam Smith

Year built 1987
Location of boat Long Beach, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, Good value for the price I paid.
Gear that's been added Solar vent, Memory-foam mattress pads (Huge improvement for sleeping) Fuel gauge, Replaced leaking transom shower, Replaced main & jib halyards and furling line
Structural or complex improvements Fwd/Neu/Rev lever linkage broke inside the pedistal. The housing is made of plastic and I was able to rebuild the broken piece by using a product called "plastic fusion" by superglue- (It cures strong and is machinable) I first tried regular epoxy but the chemical reaction started to melt the plastic housing.
The boat's best features Easy to single hand and sail. Yanmar engine will run a straight 8 hours at 2400 and use about 2 gallons of fuel. 6'2" Headroom and great use of space
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The head design is confining if you are over 4 feet tall. Cabin sole is getting weak around bilge opening.
Sailing characterisitcs A 24 mile crossing to Catalina Island can range from 5 Knot calm and flat conditions to 5-6 foot swells and 25 knot winds with everyone in the cockpit looking "concerned"
Motoring characterisitcs Motoring is fine and I have gotten better at docking speeds to avoid using Fwd/Rev to slow momentum (and chance breaking the linkage as stated above) Boat is easy to steer
Liveability My wife and two daughters (6 and 8 yrs) can spend 3-4 nights on board at anchor/mooring without problem. It's liveable
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No direct dealings
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought boat from broker (H&S Yachts, San Diego) I would recommend this dealer on a new purchase
Other comments Part of my decision to buy my boat was this website and the many positive reviews it had on the 28.5
