Review of the Hunter 25 by Mark Crociati

Year built 1976
Location of boat Fairhaven, MA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I refurbished this boat for two years. This 25 is a bit unsual as it has an inboard Yanmar, I haven't seen any others yet. This was close to a project boat. Many parts were missing such as cabin steps, hand-rails, interior lighting, tiller arm, compas etc. Sourced and replaced most of it, hull-liner was falling off so I replace that as well, reconditioned hull including keel. This is quite a seaworthy vessel. It seems quite heavy for it's size which works well in my sailing grounds of Buzzard's Bay. I increased my main sail size as I feel it was too small at the foot. I use my 150 Genoa most as it increases performance to meet other sailboats of it's class. I do want to buy a 35 foot in the next few years as this is not a live-aboard vessel.
Gear that's been added A generator, otherwise no, but, satellite radio works great on a sailboat.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Stability.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Balsa core seems to be rotten at the mast-step.
Sailing characterisitcs Stable but with weather helm.
Motoring characterisitcs I have an outboard 8 as my inboard won't start, the 8 seems under powered, could use a 15hp.
Liveability Bad headroom, decent space and storage below.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) These Hunters are a complete world apart from current Hunters.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
