Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Stephen Ord

Year built 1980
Location of boat Grand Bend, Ont, Canada (Lake Huron)
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes!
Gear that's been added Electonic windex, Mapping GPS, Spinnaker, Bimini, Dodger, rewired entire boat, cockpit cushions, all running rigging, new electric panel. downhaul, Furling Genoa, reconditioned Mainsail, new genoa
Structural or complex improvements see above.
The boat's best features Quite fast for a cruising vessel with quite high PHRF
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. engine access is not the best but not the worst I have seen. Cockpit access to engine difficult to keep water tight.
Sailing characterisitcs Well the "proof is in the puddin'" as the saying goes. We won Boat of the year in 2004 for our 50 boat sailing club. Our boat came second in class in an international 130 mile race. We have yet to lose a race this year (hope that doesn't jinx us). In 2002 I won a 28 mile single handed race as well.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors along at hull speed but not max revs. Good progress in even heavy seas of 6 foot waves.
Liveability Very liveable for up to 4 adults for periods of 2-3 weeks. Comforable V berth. Double berth from cabin sofa is a little narrow. Galley is a bit short of counter space. Could use more drawers for clothing but was not designed for full time liveaboard
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments Great cruiser for Great Lakes. Cannot speak for coastal sailing in salt water.
