Review of the Hunter 28.5 by Rick Williams

Year built 1985
Location of boat Lake Texoma
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, for the money it's a good boat.
Gear that's been added No. I will be adding a 135% r/f genoa, tapered full batten main and asymetrical spinnaker in the spring.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Boat reaches very well. I have been able to run with boats rated quicker while on the reach. The Yanmar is depenable and powerful.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Hull to deck joint leaks. Heavy prop walk. Very poor down wind performance. I'm not sold on the mast head rig with swept back spreaders. Dinette table is in the way.
Sailing characterisitcs Reaches better than most. Points very well. Helm is responsive. When running the boat is a dog. Much slower in light air than I would have believed. Likes heavier air.
Motoring characterisitcs Very good.
Liveability Head area is too small. Hunter could have squared the entry to the head for improved room. The dining table is in the way. The rest is good.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any No
