Review of the Hunter 29.5 by Jim Saunderson

Year built 1995
Location of boat Middle River, Md
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely! My wife would sell the house before this boat, on which she was introduced to sailing. Can't even get her near our runabout any more! It is absolutely perfect for us to getaway for the weekend.
Gear that's been added No, boat was pretty well equipped for weekending.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Large cockpit, roomy salon with very large table and seating, nice sized wheel with walk around space in cockpit (no knee banging like on Catalinas!), double bow anchor rollers, dependable engine that runs on vapor, well lit salon from natural light coming through large plexiglass sections, cockpit shower, autopilot, nice cockpit line storage, lines all run to cockpit for easy handling, love ease of exterior maintenance! (stainless steel handrails vs teak).
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Main sail difficult to raise completely (slides seem to catch last 4-5 inches), having to reef at 12-15 MPH winds, very strong weather helm, water does not easily drain from companion way overhead hatch.
Sailing characterisitcs Very strong weather helm, definitely have to reef at 12-15 MPH or you will be losing control. Otherwise wonderful! We only cruise, but naturally every other sail remotely on the same course is a race, and we overtake much more than we are overtaken!!
Motoring characterisitcs Plenty of power and maneuverability. Engine is a dream.
Liveability Perfect for 1-2 couples for weekends, or week+ for couple.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Excellent. Getting older designed parts, tour of factory....extremely nice bunch of people to deal with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace,Md., this boat was a trade in, there were no hassles, and we came to agreement very easily. Accomodating for sea trial, docking, etc. throughout purchase. Made for nice experience.
Other comments Great boat for great price. Nothing really needed to sail away. For a 9-10 year old boat, it seems to have held up very nicely.
