Review of the Hunter 27_89-94 by Clement Caddell

Year built 1989
Location of boat Lake Norman, NC
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1992
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The boat came on the market (used) while we still had our H22.We knew it was an excellent value, and this boat in particular was very well equipped.
Gear that's been added "Ship Shades" for the main cabin, a VHF radio, a double-ended mainsheet.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features The roominess in the cabin. We like the aft berth in the winter, and the v-berth in the summer. This boat sails comfortably. The cockpit is sized-right and all controls are within easy reach.I think the winged-keel is great for lake sailing. the boat is a great weekender for my wife and I.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The only drawback is the lack of a mainsheet traveler. I would prefer anarched traveler mounted over the cabin. It is a lot of work to trim themain for racing purposes. I race mine about 10 times a year, mostly single-handed.
Sailing characterisitcs Perfect in 10 to 12 knots with a 125% jib. Don't try to use too big a genny. It is a fractionalrig, use the main and don't overtrim. With an asymetrical chute off the wind, it is wonderful!
Motoring characterisitcs With a 2-bladed martec folding prop, it does not manuver well at low speeds. In reverse, you must get headway for any steerage. It is not good in close quarters. It motors well in forward at up to 6 knots. (Inboard Yanmar 9hp)
Liveability Great for one or two-night stays. The ice-box is well insulated, the hotwater heater holds well too. We are pleased. We just "turned down" an opportunity to sell and buy a great First 310r, but it didn't"trip our trigger" like the H27 did.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Since I bought both of my Hunters used, I haven't really dealt with themlike other owners. I have worked with my local dealer as wll as calls to Hunter Marine.I have had good experiences each and every time.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
