Review of the Hunter 23 by Mike Foster

Year built 1986
Location of boat Lake Wawasee Indiana
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added No
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features How it sails, large cabin for its size, ease of manuvering on deck its size. fixed keel and wings
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. my biggest frustration is being able to stop the rudder from moveing in the rudder head. when racing i can feel a twitch in the rudder after tacks, or puffs making it hard to trim the boat out.
Sailing characterisitcs it is great in a blow. been caught in a couple of squalls and was really happy with how the boat performed. I seem to point well and have finished no worse than 2 on the water against boat of 25 and 26 feet. I love my Hunter
Motoring characterisitcs i rarely motor except in and out of my slip
Liveability marignal but ok for a couple on weekend. i really use this boat for daysailing
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) very helpful
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any purchased from an individual
Other comments i sailed several Hunter both on Lakes and on tours of the great lakes. when i am ready to move up and do only great lakes sailing i will buy a Hunter. but not one of ther waterbalast as i am not overwhelmed by them and find the decks hateful to get around on.
