Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by David Knight

Year built 1989
Location of boat Racine, WI
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I have enjoyed it and have put many additional upgrades on it as I intend to keep it for quite some time.
Gear that's been added Yes all the things I would want to, to make for great sailing. Full electronics, solid vang, 135% jib, and super sealed bottom with Interlux 2000.
Structural or complex improvements Barrier coat - Interlux 2000
The boat's best features Cabin layout, and ease of handling.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Areas of product design that do not take into account the climatic changes of our locale. Places where water can lay and freeze during the winter. I sponge ever drop of water out of every nook and cranny to avoid ice breakage.
Sailing characterisitcs I have sailed my boat in almost every kind of situation. I have layed my main on the water in a roll down, even with a reefed sail. I make long and short passages in 8 to 10 foot following and head on seas. With a dodger she is dry and handles well, alot of work , but handles well. For regular sailing, she is a dream. For hard sailing she give a feel of confidence.
Motoring characterisitcs The 2GM Yanmar is a very quiet and economical performing engine. I run generally at 2500 to 3000 rpm and cruise at 6.5 to 7 with fuel usuage at about 1/3 of a gal per hour. Couldn't ask for anything better.
Liveability It is just right for two people, maybe three, for a two week cruise. Four is a bit crowded, but possible. The cockpit is a little small for any crowd above three.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have nothing but the highest regard for Hunter, from factory tours, to support, to product replacement, to service, and dealer cooperation.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The casual starting experience has grown into a great continuing relationship, with weekly exchanges.
Other comments They are great boats and meet a much needed nitch in the production boat industry, far better then the competition.
