Review of the Hunter 31_83-87 by Don Boccuti

Year built 1984
Location of boat Chesapeake
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1992
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, My wife has often wanted to buy a larger boat, but I have resisted. I am a USCG captain with a 25 ton license and I am also an ASA sailing instructor. I teach on larger Island Packets but I am always happy when I get to sail my Hunter. She is responsive and her weight, shoal draft keel and large sail plane make her an excellent boat on the Chesapeake.
Gear that's been added Auto helm
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features speed and perfomance
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The main hatch has leaked for so long,in spite of my many attempts to repair it, so that I am begining to see delamination of the cabin sole.
Sailing characterisitcs points well to weather, stable and forgiving.
Motoring characterisitcs slower than other boats but easy on fuel
Liveability very comfortable, I wish that the table retracted like the Catalina and that the seating was "U" shaped instead of across from each other.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not responsive, I was bruskly ushered to a dealer. Because of the age of the boat I didn't get any satisfaction.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any bought used from private broker
Other comments Mostly pleased with my decision to purchase a Hunter.
