Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Marion Fannaly

Year built 1981
Location of boat Slidell, LA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1994
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably not. Mostly because I want a bigger one.
Gear that's been added Roller furling headsail.
Structural or complex improvements Nothing structural. Replaced hatches, lights, head, etc.
The boat's best features It's a good, solid, inexpensive boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Plastic ports and hatches are junk. The bilge is too shallow (but you can get a small electric pump under the floorboards). Sleeping accomodations are poor.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails fairly well. Could do a lot better if equipped with proper hardware (genoa tracks, traveller, etc.). Wife and kids like its stability, but it won't win any races.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat is undepowered with the Yanmar 1GM. However, I knew that when I bought it. The motor is reliable and gets me to and from the dock, but it won't handle a strong current or headwind and chop.
Liveability Good daysailer. Poor overnighter. Berths are short and narrow with thin cushions. We just use an air mattres on the cabin sole. V-berth is OK for kids if they're not claustrophobic. Cockpit and built in stern ladder are best features.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) NA
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought it from a broker who was quite helpful. However, I'm not sure that they knew a lot more about boats than I did.
