Review of the Hunter 40 by Marc Dupre

Year built 1984
Location of boat Perth Amboy NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes,Yes,Yes. It is the perfect Racer /cruiser with lots of space and comfort below, the ability to cruise with 2 or 3 people with a nicely ballanced helm and gets there fast plus it is a very competitive race boat that can sail all points of sail with the best of the race machines. NO COMPROMISES HERE.
Gear that's been added All new sails, North and Banks. Replaced all hardware- blocks, shives, traveller, wiches, haliards, sheets, roller furling, carbon pole, maxiprop etc
Structural or complex improvements Expect to drop keel this winter and deal with rust and seepage problems. will need to replace cabil sole also due to rot from water seepage from below. Replaced shrouds and headstay
The boat's best features Sailing charcteristics; tacks thru 80 degrees and sails /points with speed. rolls dead down wind with the huge masthead chute and reaches with the best of them
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Keel rust, seepagefrom below , keel joint deck leaks from above
Sailing characterisitcs Excellent see above
Motoring characterisitcs Good as I would expect with a 2 bladed feathering race prop
Liveability just fine
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) helpfull considdering the age of the boat
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased thru an independant broker in Fla and he was very helpfull
Other comments the Legend 40 was such a great design that I do not understand why it was discontinued. Why mess with success?
