Review of the Hunter 27_75-84 by Tom Lawson

Year built 1981
Location of boat Sandusky Ohio
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this is my first boat of any length other than a canoe and is a great platform to learn on. Also having heard all the talk about "cheap hunters" around the docks and then talking to the owners of other boats, I've come to the conclusion that unless it's new, they all have the same general problems, they just paid more and have less left to fix what needs it.
Gear that's been added mostly fixed, replaced or rewired things that needed attention.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features Very affordable for the features it has. Opening ports, inboard diesel engine (even though it is a little under powered - but only if motoring into heavy wind), head with holding tank, pressurized water and much more. The draw back is that if you like everything to work properly, you'll spend a lot of time working the buggs out, unless the last owner took good care of all the systems.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have a small leak on the starboard side over the fridge and I can't figure out where the water is coming from - next thing is to make sure all the toe rail bolts are tight.
Sailing characterisitcs Good but as I've stated this is the first boat I've owned and one of two sail boats I've been on other than a couple FJ's. I wouldn't say its slow though. Make sure you reef early, it won't slow you down if the winds are good and it will make sail a lot easier on you and your crew.
Motoring characterisitcs Slow but steady, very noisey. Don't plan on holding any conversations.
Liveability Very good, My wife, kids (4-7) and I weekend everyother weekend (weather permitting) and we love it. There is enough room to store "too much" gear and from what I've heard around the docks and read about, that's a pretty good problem to have in a 27' sail boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Haven't had to.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments A great boat at half the price of most other boats in its class. I sailed down Lake Hurron to Lake Erie and across to Sandusky with a friend ( who didn't know how to sail either) on the first day (of a six day journey) that I owned the boat and had a blast. I'm not sure if every boat would have treated me so well. I think I'll look for another boat (bigger) and further away for the next trip.
