Review of the Hunter 466 by David Fitzpatrick

Liveaboard? Yes  
Owner bought the boat in 2003  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The aft cabin is more luxurious but less practical in big seas.  
Gear that's been added Only added the dinghy so far  
Structural or complex improvements None needed.  
The boat's best features Speed - with and without the yanmar 76 Ease of handling o bow thruster helps alot here o furling main and foresails o autopilot Live aboard amenities o great a/c o sound system o flat screen o microwave  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Minor problems o water system feeds preferentially from forward tanks and starves even when the lateral tanks are full o windlass has had intermittant failure to operate o CO detectors chime constantly on closed boat when battery charging (shore power)  
Sailing characterisitcs o Points beautifully o Reaches well from abaft - 8.6 kts in 23 kt wind in a quarter reach o A bit too much weather helm in beam reach o autopilot (fluxgate) inop during heavy pitching condition o Very responsive - turns like a much smaller boat  
Motoring characterisitcs o Excellent Cruise - 76 hp yanmar drives 8.2 kts at 3000 rpm o Slow speed with bow thruster excellent - I had a slip in the corner. Every trip home ended with backing down a narrow lane and stern first to the dock.  
Liveability o Excellent at the marina - I lived aboard last summer o At anchor - not tested yet. Will report later this summer.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) o N/A  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any o Sandy Hook Yacht Sales in Atlantic Highlands NJ were great. They gave me plenty of time on the boat in the water to help me make my decision. o We'll see how they do this summer with 'last year's customer'  
Other comments I'd like to see the Liberty with the davits available for the 466.
