Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Bob Tagert

Year built 1979
Location of boat lower Potomac River
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definately. The design and construction of this boat is great. The only thing I would do different is get one in the 35 foot range.
Gear that's been added Since the boat was used, she had most of the necessary gear. The only thing s I have added is a GPS and a cockpit VHS
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features The boat is a better sailor than I am. After thirteen years of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, last year was the worst. Heavy air, big seas and boarding seas. The boat was sound and carried me through. The boat is fast for her weight aned the fin keel makes handeling a breeze.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. the board between the I-beam and the compression post is wearing. I think that this is a problem that will have to be adressed in the next year.
Sailing characterisitcs I race my boat once or twice a year and have done well against newer boats. the boat responds very well and can tack quickly. however, most of my time is spent destination cruising and the boat has served well in all wind conditions and excells in winds of 12-15knots.
Motoring characterisitcs the Yanmar has served me well and I should take better care of it than I do. Two years ago the orginal fuel filter fouled and I had to sail back into my slip. Now it makes a great paperweight as I have installed a new a larger filter. Backing down, the boat pulls hard to port which is great when pulling along side a dock port to.
Liveability Space is very nice except for the low cross beam from the salon to the head. Many cracked skulls. Stowage is good and the icebox is adequate.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Their staff has been very helpful whenever I have had a question, and the Hunter Rallies have been a great learning experience.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
