Review of the Hunter 26.5 by David C. Haan

Owner bought the boat in 1991  
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes! The boat is ideal for a small family, and although all of my children are grown and have married, I still sail with them and my grandchildren. We sail mainly in Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. The boat is not really large enough for long voyages, but is all that we need for weekend recreation.  
Gear that's been added I have added shore power and dockside pressure water system. also VHF radio, Loran, GPS, auto pilot, and microwave oven. I also installed solar powered cabin ventilation.  
Structural or complex improvements The only structural change that I made was to install a folding door to separate the main cabin from the forward cabin where the toilet is housed.  
The boat's best features The ease of sailing and the shallow draft wing keel that enables me to put it on a trailer to take home from the marina for winter storage.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing has broken down in all the years that I have had the boat. It seems to be very well made.  
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is fairly fast compared to other boats of similar size in my sailing area. The shallow keel does make the boat more tender than tie Islander that I previously owned, but she seems to point well and I am satisfied with the perfomance under sail. Under power in heavy weather hoewver, the outboard motor likes to come out of the water on occasion because of the stern mount. This can be unnerving!  
Motoring characterisitcs See the comment above.  
Liveability The cabin is roomy for two couples on a weekend jaunt, but I would not want to live aboard for any lenght of time. The added microwave oven in the galley makes dockside living easier than depending on the alcohol stove.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have not dealt with Hunter since my purchase from Grand Isle Marina in 1991, but I do appreciate the Hunter magazine that I receive periodically. It keeps me informed on current topics and events.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The dealership from which I purchased the boat is now under new ownership, but I had no problems when I bought the boat many years ago.  
Other comments I look forward to many more years sailing Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan in my Hunter 26.5, which my son named "HEAD HUNTER" many pleasant years ago.
