Review of the Hunter 34 by Richie Mahoney

Year built 1983
Location of boat St. Petersburg, FL-- on Great Circle Now
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Blue water, extended passages
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? YES!! Livability is great for your average 24yo single cruiser...even room for overnight guests...hehehe!! Plenty of room down below and "Damn SEXY" looking for an older boat.
Gear that's been added Mermaid Central Heat/Air...kicked her off because she would always breakdown in July and August (her time of the year), now have a Flagship central unit....works great!! Added Adler/Barbour "Reefer" to keep the goodies cold, West Marine AGM Batteries kick major booty, Ceramic Tile in Galley, Blue Seas electrical control panel...the big one with 20 DC and 20 AC breakers with analog Volts and Amps, desktop "puter" with flat panel monitor on the nav station, DVD surround sound, new "California Style" Bimini...dodger soon tho come..and I am taking donations!!
Structural or complex improvements Had a soft spot in the fordeck on port side, right around the place where the boat humped a piling in a small storm named Hurricane Andrew. Made it solid with West System epoxy.
The boat's best features This puppy has smoe room!! There is plenty of storage...there are more smuggling compartments that I keep finding...I thought I found a Cuban family one day!!
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. My engine compartment...when you walk on this thing every day, either dripping wet or moving quickly, it starts to give a little bit. If anybody has a good idea, give me a shout!
Sailing characterisitcs She's quick, turns on a dime, and loves extra weight. I did 9.7 with a crew of 6, a full water tank, holding tank, and fuel tank, in 15kts. Top speed I've had was 12.9 and I was hoping for 13...jus gimme a damn tenth of a knot!!
Motoring characterisitcs Mine was repowered with "My Lil Commie", a Westerbeke 21. Had some vibration problems when I cracked a motor mount, had even more when I blew the head gasket...oops! Great power and responds well in forward and reverse, not worth a crap in a cramped marina, backing in with a heavy cross wind.
Liveability 3 years thus far livingaboard sould say it all!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Never had to deal with Hunter...never really wanted to.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought my boat "Pre-Sailed" from the previous owner.
