Review of the Hunter 40 by Jere J. Riggs

Year built 1978
Location of boat Solomons, Maryland
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, really enjoy the Legend.
Gear that's been added Raymarine ST60 depth, wind and log instruments, JRC 1800C radar/chartplotter and Standard Horizon Spectrum VHF/FM
Structural or complex improvements Yes, Sanded hull last Spring and had application of 6 ply barrier coat. Hull was probably laid up with too much acetone in the gelcoat which leached through the hardening gelcoat as a gas. Was definitly not a delamination condition because no bubbles were discovered. Pulled mast and replaced all wiring because of corrosion at the four pole trailer connector. Ran new wiring to bilge for connecting.
The boat's best features Interior space and storage. A strong and reliable hull along with deck design.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Possible location of aft holding tank. Need to pull sole this year and check it over. Pulled and cleaned out forward holding tank last year and resealed it with 3M 4200. So far no more leaks. The 40 gallon fuel tank is glassed into the compartment. Cannot be removed and cleaned except for a major operation. The take up tube cannot presently be removed for inspection or cleaning unless the tank is tipped or the tube bent.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails well with a shoal with little
Motoring characterisitcs Departed Solomons last November (2002) for the ICW but weather and wave caused engine to cut out and quit. Installed an electric fuel pump which was not the solution. Had motored for a year plus with no problems. Lesson learned is to have fuel polished or tank cleaned before starting out again
Liveability Excellent
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Several occasions in the past when I have called to determine 1987 vendors and parts they have been excellent in both providing service and resources.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought it used.
Other comments I became fixated with the Hunter Legend 40 and began looking for that that specific model in 1998. Found one and can't find another boat to compare with that design.
