Review of the Hunter 25.5 by Scott Burns

Year built 1984
Location of boat Bar Harbor Maine
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? If I could turn the clock back I would say yes and buy this boat new. After having spent many years racing and cruising the east coast. It is rare that you find a boat of this size with so much space.
Gear that's been added GPS plotter, Gps laptop navigation,am/fm stereo with cockpit speakers, tri-light, decklight, more cabin reading lights,Hot & Cold pressurized water, Generator and more.
Structural or complex improvements Installed new electrical panels with circuits breakers. DC volt, DC amp and battery monitoring meters. 2 AGM type batteries, tri-light, deck light, cabin halogen reading lights at each berth. Added 110volt AC 5 circuit panel shore power with transfer switch for a 2000 watt honda generator, 2 bank multi stage batery charger, AC outlets thru out the vessel and 700 watt inventer for light electrical loads. Added plumbing for hot & cold pressurized water with 2 1/2 gallon 1500 watt electric hot water tank. Cockit has rinse shower compartment, with upgraded galley hand pump and H&C facets. Tossed the alcohol stove overboard after a small cabin fire. No damage except charred the galley counter top a little. So I installed a new counter top. Added a microwave oven next to the alcohol stove pushing the microwave next to the hull and extending the shelve out to support the microwave. Bow cocks, and larger bow cleat. It sure paid off in one wild unexpected Noreaster. with 10' sea in a sheltered bay and winds of 50kts +.
The boat's best features Space below deck and above. Large cockpit space, her availability to point higher in to the wind, high freeboard.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Gel coat cracks and topside leaks that I haven't found yet.
Sailing characterisitcs Pure delight.
Motoring characterisitcs Mine has a Yamaha 10hp with electric start. docking in tight spaces and having to reach down to control the shifter and gas with a strong wind blowing you off the dock can be an experience. That is when I wish I had an inboard engine. Otherwise she will do 6.5 or better depending on current, seas, and ETC and gets about 34KM per 5 gal tank.
Liveability I have rebuilt my boat from a boat grave yard. In the process of rebuilding my boat I built in all the convinces of home somewhat. AT 25' I can live a long weekend in comfort knowing that the next time out it all there.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt with Hunter marine
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any My boat was in a boat grave yard in a boat yard loacted in New Hampshire. When I first saw it the hatch way had been kicked in and about 18" of green water inside. The decks where black with pine pitch, rigging, sails, cushions all rotted away. She was in sad shape. When she was trucked back to Maine I began the task of rebuilding her fromthe inside out. Today all the teak has been replaced exceptthe galley area where the wood hasn't delaminated yet. I took all the wood, including the cabin sole, guted her down to fiberglass hull and started over.
