Review of the Hunter 23.5 by Wayne Jackson

Year built 1993
Location of boat Lake Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1995
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Probably not. Catalina has much better gear as do other companies for this model year. Hunter is starting to catch up with the ballgame and improving their hardware. I enjoy my boat and have spent many relaxing and satisfying hours on it. The trailer which came with the boat was at best barely minimal and I almost lost the boat, trailer and my truck and life when I was passed by an 18 wheeler going down the the expressway in Michigan while traveling 60 MPH. I learmed a valuable lesson - don't trailer your trailerable 23.5 unless you drive at 45 - 50 MPH !
Gear that's been added compass, tri-data recorder, boom tent, etc..
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features Ability to get into shallow water. This has been a great boat for crusing inland lakes and portions of the Great Lakes which are close to shore.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Is tender in 15 knot winds and rounds up in 18 - 20 knot winds.
Sailing characterisitcs Sailing characteristics ?
Motoring characterisitcs Have a Honda 9.9 HP with a new 4 blade prop and pushes the boat at hull speed most of the time.
Liveability daysailer mostly and occasional overnight.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Did not deal directly with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good. Dealt with Torresen Marine in Muskegon and had a good experience.
