Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by JChaplin

Year built 1993
Location of boat Barnegat Bay, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? The boat is a sound investment for a mid range production boat. Our boat has required what may appear to many as normal replacements i.e. electrical charger, nav. lights wiring (corroded), the entire waste system (flange to waste tank corroded beyond repair, slightly leaking) enterior cushions (mildew
Gear that's been added Auto Pilot, Battery Charger, batteries, Stereo w interior
Structural or complex improvements Needed to replace all lexan port and starbord windows due to crazing and leaks. DON'T use black 5200 sealant ... does not set up fast enough and sags on verticle surfaces.
The boat's best features Size, Layout, reasonably adequate size for a party of 6 for a day sail. Cramped beyond that for six adults.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leakage at flange to holding tank. Waste line epoxied to flange at input, unable to release / break bond w/o further damaging allready corroded fitting. Needed to replace tank and assoiciated lines. .5" teak eyebrows located on either side of external cabin are problematic w bowing to fibberglass and unnecessary maintenance. Poorly designed routing of nav. electrical wires through bow and stern pulpits. Requires you to fish replacement wires through the larger 1" pulpit then through a tube at a right angle turn through what appears a supporting tube no larger than 3/8" inner diameter or smaller. If the wires or snake breaks or the wire insallation frays your SOL. The chart table needs to be redesigned to permit you to open the table top fully. At present if you install a VHF or stereo w protruding faceplate you are unable to fully open the chart table .... any recomendations here would be helpful.
Sailing characterisitcs Primarily a day sailor, @ avg. 16 - 20 knots.
Motoring characterisitcs Underpowered @ 18hp
Liveability Too tight
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very helpfull re. replacment of lexan ports.
