Review of the Hunter 26 by Nancy Ward-Snyder

Year built 1997
Location of boat Lake Champlain VT
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Some times I'm not sure if I would have gone with a boat that has some much free board. We have been caught twice with increased wind and have been spun around like a top. I'm not sure if it is the free board, the centerboard, of the very delicate balance of the rudder placement. We are adding another rief point and getting a storm jib to see if that helps when we are out on the broad lake. Other wise we love our Hunter!
Gear that's been added
Structural or complex improvements Yes, the thickens of the boat is not consistent. In many areas, daylight is quite clearly to seen.
The boat's best features The trailable features are great.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The clanging of the electrical lines in the mast, especially at night. Not having a down haul to take of the bag in the main sail as the rope in the sail shrinks. Water getting in around the entry hatch, that is why we decided to have a mooring, so when it rains we avoid that problem. The battery placement caused us a problem, because when we did one of our 360's the battery tipped over and acid spilled out. We found it when we took the boat out for the winter. This year we are going to put it in the well infront of the outboard and run the wires through the hull. The plastic pieces for the sink water pumps have caused us problems each season.
Sailing characterisitcs Limited because of the wind conditons where we live and only having one set of sails. Other wise when the wind and the sails are in the right combinations, it does very well point and keeping up with bigger boats.
Motoring characterisitcs OK
Liveability Good
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I am still waiting for a refund of warranty work I had done on the boat with Hunters ok and they even send the part to the yard because the design was changed but not the housing for the pulleys to lower and raise the centerboard. That was in 1997.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any None that I care to write down.
